What our servers record

Our servers log each request: the IP address it came from, the time, the page or query requested, and the information your browser or software sends with it, such as its name and version, the referring page and your language setting. They also record how the server responded. Cookie contents are not logged.

Cookies

We set one cookie, and only if you are shown our automated-traffic check page and click through it. It is called dd_h. It holds your IP address and a fixed code, lasts one day, and is used only to let you past the check.

Hosting

datadawn.org and our bulk downloads are served through Cloudflare, which handles those requests for us. Our database sites, data.datadawn.org and regs.datadawn.org, run on a server we rent from a hosting provider.

Analytics

datadawn.org uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page visits. It runs a small script that reports which page was viewed, the referring page, your browser's name and version, how much memory the page used, and load times. It doesn't set cookies.

Why

To keep the site running and secure, to manage heavy automated traffic, and to count how many people use it. Visitor counts use a scrambled form of the address. The scrambling key changes every 30 days, and the scrambled forms are deleted after 31 days.

How long

For now we keep our server logs without a fixed deletion date. We will set a retention limit before we promote the site more widely, and we'll update this page when we do.

What we publish

We may publish aggregate traffic figures, such as totals and the names of large automated crawlers, for example in our weekly traffic digest. We never publish individual addresses or networks.

Sharing

We don't sell or share our logs. These hosting providers process requests on our behalf. We would disclose logs only if legally required.

Automated clients

Please use our bulk downloads (weekly database snapshots, listed at https://dumps.datadawn.org/manifest.json) rather than crawling page by page. Heavy traffic is rate-limited.
